Week One Recap :)
Woooowww… week one is finished!! The past week has gone by so fast. Every day I feel like I learn something new, and our friends at Spectrum have taught us so much along the way. We are so lucky to be working beside such an amazing crew, who have made us feel so comfortable in this new space. Lucy and I are a lot more comfortable in the kitchen than we were at the start of the week. It took us a few days to get the hang of cooking for so many people, but now we have a set system in place. The prep work takes the longest time, so we start our day mornings off with that. We have found splitting the recipe and each prepping and cooking separately works wonders; this helps us cook large quantities in a shorter amount of time. The two of us love cooking and are big fans of our setup. I believe that we will stick with our routine for next week. We were told to cook vegan meals for 30 people, but have found that everyone eats meat. We have found that everyone prefers having some kind of meat on the side of their dish. Next week, we will be cooking meat for everyone at Spectrum, I think that they will be very excited. I think we over-complicated some meals, so looking ahead, we will make some changes. This is also the time of year when Spectrum gets many food donations because people are having lots of parties, galas, BBQs, etc. We do not want to create an abundance of food waste, so we have taken the past few days to plan, prep grocery lists, and look into sharing the importance of the use of Narcan. We realized that many in our community might not know what Narcan is/ what it does. It is a very important medicine, as it is used for the treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose. It rapidly reverses an opioid overdose by attaching to opioid receptors and reversing and blocking the effects of other opioids. It has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system- making it safe to carry for everyone. This is important information for everyone to know, so we are thinking about how to share this with Proctor! We love our project, and can’t wait to start week 2 <3
